HISTORY
In the spring of 1992, following a University of Minnesota seminar on Adolescents and HIV/AIDS, a group of concerned parents, educators, clergy, health and social services professionals, and members of the LGBT community met in Rochester to discuss ways to meet the needs of LGBT youth in southeastern Minnesota. Gay and Lesbian Youth Services (GLYS) is the result of those discussions.
MISSION
Gay and Lesbian Youth Services is a nonprofit support, education, and advocacy organization for LGBT youth ages 13-18, and those dealing with issues of youth sexual orientation, including questioning teens and all youth-serving adults.
GOALS
- To provide a Youth Support Group at which LGBT or questioning teens and their supportive peers can experience a safe place to meet with each other in an open, confidential, and nonjudgmental atmosphere.
- To provide speakers and resources to persons and groups interested in the issues of youth sexual orientation.
- To advocate for LGBT youth needs with other organizations, agencies, and the general public in order to promote a safer and healthier community for LGBT teens.
FUNDING
Gay and Lesbian Youth Services is funded through individual, group, and corporate
donations and through grants from foundations. Funders who
have supported GLYS include: Philanthrofund Foundation, The
Rochester Area Foundation, and The Chicago Resource Center.
Although GLYS is not a United Way of Olmsted County agency
at this time, individuals may designate United Way contributions
to be given to Gay and Lesbian Youth Services. GLYS has a
brokerage account with an investment company and is able to
accept gifts of stock and/or other securities. Gay and Lesbian
Youth Services is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered
with the state of Minnesota. Donations are tax-deductible.
